Therapy & psychiatric care, under one roof.
A trauma-informed group practice offering the full arc of mental health care — from a first psychiatric evaluation to long-term therapeutic support.
Most practices offer therapy or psychiatry, and ask you to coordinate the rest. Here, both belong to the same team — so your story stops getting lost in the gaps.
Hale Mana Counseling provides individual, couples, family, child, and adolescent therapy, plus psychiatric evaluation and medication management, at offices in Wailuku and Makawao on Maui and by telehealth anywhere in Hawaiʻi. Most major Hawaiʻi insurance is accepted, including QUEST plans, and self-pay rates are published on our FAQ page.

Two ways in, one plan.

Therapy Services
For the whole spectrum of need.
From a child working through a school transition to a couple navigating a major life shift — all anchored in trauma-informed practice.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one work with a clinician matched to you. For adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, addiction recovery, or anything that's been weighing.
Couples Therapy
Relational work that strengthens connection, repairs trust, and supports couples through transitions — using attachment, IFS, and somatic approaches.
Family Therapy
Whole-family work for the moments when something bigger needs to shift — across generations, around a struggling member, or through life's harder seasons.
Adolescent Counseling
Therapy meeting teens where they are — academic stress, identity, family dynamics, social media, anxiety, depression. Built for real teenagers, not the idea of one.
Child & Play Therapy
Developmentally-attuned work for keiki using play, art, and somatic-based modalities. For anxiety, behavioral struggles, family transitions, or after a hard event.
Long-Term Follow-Up
For clients who've completed primary treatment elsewhere — including Mana Recovery Center — and want continuing care that meets recovery where it actually lives.
Psychiatric Care
Medication, thoughtfully prescribed.
For some people, therapy is the work. For others, the right medication is what makes the work possible. Our PMHNP coordinates directly with your therapist — one team, one plan, no parallel charts.
— STAGE I
Initial Evaluation
Comprehensive psychiatric assessment of mental health history, current symptoms, medical context, and goals. We listen carefully before we prescribe.
60–90 minute appointment
— STAGE II
Medication Management
Conservative, evidence-based prescribing with regular follow-ups to monitor response, side effects, and adjustments. No reflexive prescribing.
30–45 minute follow-ups
— STAGE III
Long-Term Follow-Up
Once you're stable, visits stretch to what makes sense — quarterly, biannually, or as life shifts. Coordination with therapy stays continuous.
30-min check-ins · As-needed
Therapeutic Modalities
The tools we actually use.
Brainspotting
A trauma-focused modality that uses fixed eye positions to access and process deeply held activation. Carmen is one of the few Brainspotting Consultants on Maui — meaning she trains other clinicians in it.
Helpful for: trauma, PTSD, performance blocks, addiction recovery
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — a structured, evidence-based protocol for processing traumatic memory and reducing its hold on the present.
Helpful for: PTSD, single-event trauma, anxiety, phobias
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
A parts-based approach that treats inner experience as a system of subpersonalities, gently meeting protective parts and the wounds underneath.
Helpful for: complex trauma, self-criticism, attachment wounds
Somatic-Based Work
Therapy that includes the body — what it holds, signals, and remembers. Especially valuable for clients whose trauma is more felt than verbal.
Helpful for: trauma, anxiety, dissociation, chronic stress
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Structured work on the thoughts–feelings–behavior loop. Practical, evidence-based, and useful when symptom relief is needed before depth work.
Helpful for: anxiety, depression, OCD, panic, sleep
Play Therapy
For keiki, language often isn't the right tool. Play therapy uses metaphor, art, sand tray, and movement to let children process what they can't yet say.
Helpful for: anxiety, behavioral changes, big transitions, post-event

Common concerns we address
What we treat
Conditions we work with, plainly.
A short, honest description of each, and how we tend to approach it. If what you are living with is not named here, call anyway. It probably is something we see.
Anxiety and panic
Persistent worry, racing thoughts, panic attacks, or a body that will not settle. We use CBT for practical symptom relief and somatic and Brainspotting work when anxiety is rooted in something older.
Depression and mood
Low mood, loss of interest, exhaustion, or a sense of going through the motions. Therapy, medication management, or both, coordinated by one team so nothing falls between the two.
Trauma and PTSD
Single events, long-term or childhood trauma, and the ways it shows up years later. Brainspotting, EMDR, IFS, and somatic approaches are the core of how we work, with a clinician who trains other therapists in Brainspotting on staff.
Grief and loss
The death of someone close, a diagnosis, a divorce, a home or a way of life lost. Grief work at your pace, without a timeline imposed on it.
Addiction and recovery
Continuing therapy and psychiatric care for people in recovery, including those who have completed a treatment program elsewhere and want support that fits real daily life.
ADHD
Evaluation, medication management through our psychiatric nurse practitioner, and therapy for the focus, organization, and self-worth struggles that often come with it, for teens and adults.
Pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood
Anxiety, depression, identity shifts, and birth-related trauma during pregnancy and after. A clinician on our team focuses specifically on this season.
Relationships and family conflict
Couples work using attachment, IFS, and somatic approaches, and family therapy when the whole system needs to shift, not just one person in it.
Children and teens
Play, art, and sand tray therapy for keiki ages 5 to 12, and adolescent counseling for ages 13 to 17 covering anxiety, school stress, identity, family dynamics, and social media.
Life transitions, stress, and burnout
Moves, career changes, caregiving, retirement, and the accumulated weight of doing too much for too long. Short-term, focused work is available when that is what fits.
When you're ready
Not sure which door is the right one?
That's normal. Reach out and we'll help you think it through — therapy, psychiatric care, or both. You don't need a plan before you call.
