What does Hale Mana Counseling do?
Hale Mana Counseling is an outpatient mental health practice on Maui. We offer individual, couples, family, child, and adolescent therapy, plus psychiatric evaluation and medication management, with offices in Wailuku and Makawao and telehealth anywhere in Hawaiʻi.
Is Hale Mana Counseling accepting new clients?
Yes. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner is accepting new clients for evaluations and medication management, and our therapists are scheduling new clients as availability allows. Call (808) 736-0370 to ask about current openings and the best clinician fit.
How do I make an appointment?
Call (808) 736-0370 or submit your insurance details through the Verify Insurance page. We confirm your coverage and expected cost first, usually within one business day, then schedule your first appointment. No referral is needed for most plans.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Usually no. Most Hawaiʻi health plans do not require a primary care referral for outpatient mental health care. Tricare Prime is a common exception. We tell you what your plan requires when we verify your benefits.
What are your hours?
Appointments are available Monday through Sunday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Hawaiʻi time, in person and by telehealth.

Where are your offices?
We have two Maui locations: 840 Alua St., Suite 203, Wailuku, HI 96793 (our primary office) and 81 Makawao Ave., Suites 206 and 207, Makawao, HI 96768 (upcountry).
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. We see clients by secure video or phone anywhere in the State of Hawaiʻi, including Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi. In-person care is our default on Maui, and telehealth is available whenever distance or life makes coming in hard.
Do you serve Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, and other parts of Maui?
Yes. Clients come to our Wailuku and Makawao offices from across the island, and telehealth covers anyone on Maui who prefers not to drive.
Insurance and cost
What insurance do you accept?
We are in network with most major Hawaiʻi plans, including HMSA, Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi, UHA, HMAA, Tricare, AlohaCare, UnitedHealthcare, Med-QUEST (Hawaiʻi Medicaid), and Medicare. Panels change, so we verify your specific plan before your first visit. If we are out of network, we can provide a superbill for reimbursement.
Do you accept Med-QUEST (Hawaiʻi Medicaid)?
Yes. We accept QUEST Integration plans. Send us your plan details and we will confirm coverage and any requirements before scheduling.
How much does therapy cost without insurance?
Self-pay therapy rates are $100 for a 30-minute session, $150 for a 45-minute session, $180 for a 60-minute session, $150 for family therapy, and $65 for group therapy. A diagnostic evaluation with a therapist is $200.
How much do psychiatric services cost without insurance?
A first-time psychiatric evaluation with our PMHNP is $300. Medication management follow-up visits are $200, or $250 when the visit includes psychotherapy.
Do you offer a sliding scale or reduced fees?
A discounted fee schedule based on family size and income is available for clients without coverage or with inadequate coverage. Ask about it when you call, and we will work out what is realistic.
Can I use an HSA or FSA?
Yes. Mental health care is a qualified medical expense for HSA, FSA, and HRA accounts. We provide receipts or superbills on request.
Will I get a Good Faith Estimate?
Yes. If you are uninsured or self-pay, federal law (the No Surprises Act) requires us to give you a written estimate of expected costs before treatment, and we do.
Who we see and what we treat
Do you see children and teenagers?
Yes. We offer play and somatic-based therapy for children ages 5 to 12, adolescent counseling for ages 13 to 17, and family therapy. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are available for both minors and adults.
What conditions do you treat?
Anxiety and panic, depression and mood concerns, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, addiction and recovery, ADHD, life transitions, relationship and family conflict, pregnancy and postpartum concerns, stress and burnout, and questions of self-worth, identity, and meaning.
What kinds of therapy do you use?
Brainspotting, EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic-based work, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), attachment-focused work, and play therapy for children. Every clinician practices from a trauma-informed orientation.
Do you provide psychiatric medication management?
Yes. Our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, conservative evidence-based prescribing, and ongoing medication management coordinated directly with your therapist.
Who are your clinicians?
Our team includes Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), associate mental health counselors working under the supervision of Clinical Director Carmen Cook, LMFT, and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Do you offer couples or family therapy?
Yes. Couples therapy draws on attachment, IFS, and somatic approaches. Family therapy is available for families working through conflict, transitions, or a struggling family member.
About the practice
Is Hale Mana Counseling part of Mana Recovery Center?
No. Hale Mana Counseling (Behavioral Health Associates of Hawaii, LLC) is a separate company from Mana Recovery, LLC. The two share a Clinical Director, Carmen Cook, LMFT, and Hale Mana offers continuing therapy and psychiatric care for people who have completed treatment elsewhere, including at Mana Recovery Center.
What does "Hale Mana" mean?
In Hawaiian, hale is a house or shelter and mana is spiritual energy, life force, or inner strength. Together the name reads as a house of strength, a place for healing, growth, and becoming.
Is my information kept private?
Yes. Scheduling, paperwork, and records are handled through SimplePractice, a HIPAA-compliant electronic health record. Our website privacy policy explains how information submitted through this site is handled.
Self-pay rates
Rates for clients paying without insurance. A discounted fee schedule based on family size and income is available on request. Uninsured and self-pay clients receive a written Good Faith Estimate before treatment.
